JOY NEWS’s Abena Oppong reports from the University's campus that lecturers were teaching Wednesday morning despite an announcement by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) that its three-weeks-old strike was still in force.
There were indications that UTAG would call off the strike after a meeting with Vice-Chancellors Ghana (VCG) on Tuesday. But UTAG came out of the meeting to announce that the strike, called to press home the teachers' demand for unpaid allowances, would continue because negotiations with the authorities had stalled.
UTAG members have been on strike since the beginning of August to demand, among others, their book and research allowances.
But checks this Wednesday reveal that the University of Ghana branch of UTAG has called off the strike.
President of the branch, Dr. Langbong Bini said they are convinced that their grievances will soon be addressed after a meeting with VCG.
At the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), students have began registering for the academic year as lectures will start on Monday.
At the University of Cape Coast branch of UTAG, the leaders say they have suspended their strike but are waiting for the national leadership to affirm their decision.
In the meantime, classes have been held Wednesday, while some disappointed students say their lecturers are yet to show up in class.
