Ho cries for a technical school

Mr Nelson Akorli, Principal of Kpando Technical Institute, has called on Government to, as a matter of urgency, establish a technical school in Ho.
He said because there was no such institution in the Ho area to give technical and employable skills to more youth, some of them have become social misfits.
Mr Akorli was speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the sidelines of a youth forum organised by Ho Development Association (HODA) on the theme: “Partnering the Youth for Sustainable Development.”
It was to mark this year’s Asogli Yam Festival celebration and the 10th anniversary of Togbe Afede XIV.
Mr Akorli explained that Ho was noted for craft and that the nonexistence of a technical school in the town was making it difficult for the youth to develop their talents.
Ho Technical Institute, established in 1968 to offer pre-technical training courses in various engineering and building trades, was later upgraded to Ho Polytechnic.
An attempt by the Asogli State to establish a Technical School few years ago also failed.
Mr Akorli said it was, therefore, not surprising that Ho, the regional capital, was gaining notoriety in rebellious and criminal activities and called for a change.
He said young people who took advantage of the then Ho Technical Institute were now applying their skills and had become responsible citizens.
Mr Akorli called on the Government to establish a Teacher Training College in Ho.
The youth expressed worry about the lack of a recreational centre in Ho and said such a facility with youth friendly facilities would help in mentoring young people.
Mr Edward Anim, a young entrepreneur, charged opinion leaders in the area to prioritize youth development.
He asked them to mentor the youth for sustainable development.
Togbe Afede advised the youth to work hard and not put their trust and hope in politicians.
Mr Ben Eleblu, President of the HODA, said the forum was a “step towards building a lasting relation for building a more cohesive and socially responsible society.”
The forum discussed; “The Decline of Education among the Youth, Opportunities and Challenges of Vocational Training and Increasing Social Vices in Ho”.
