National Service
Secretariat, (NSS) according to its Acting Director, Alhaji Alhassan Imoro, has
deployed eight-nine thousand, seven hundred and eighty-two National Service
Personnel across the country, to fill some vacant positions of both public and
private sectors of the economy.
He said although more
of these students from the tertiary institutions are still registering,
prospective personnel could access their posting from today onward.
Alhaji Imoro said the
national service personnel were posted to various sectors like agriculture,
co-operatives, education, health, local government and rural development, which
duties include surveying, physical planning, and civil engineering amongst
other places mandated by the National Service Scheme Act of 1980, Act 426.
About 36,426 personnel
were deployed to the education sector. This is to support in delivering and
improving the quality of teaching and learning at all levels of education in
the country.
It was noted that
government, through Ministry of Education is pursuing a policy to increase
access to quality education.
Out of the above-mentioned,
a total number of 3,157 personnel were deployed to serve in the tertiary
education, to support training institutions in faculty work, research and
administration, Alhaji Imoro said.
He said about 200 of
these personnel were sent to support Ghana Education Service Inspectorate Board
to augment the work of tracking performance at the basic education level, plus
other activities.
A total number of
3,100 were sent to support in health delivery in hospitals, clinics,
immunization centers and national health insurance scheme; this attracted 7.5%
of the posting.
Personnel mainly are
pharmacists, Doctors of Optometry, nurses, laboratory and Dispensary
Technicians. Others are accountants, psychologists and those with social work
backgrounds.
Alhaji Imoro informed
the media that, the rest are deployed into private sector where their services
are needed to help improve the socio-economic development of the country.
These areas, he said
include mining and quarrying, commerce, banking telecommunications, energy
hospitality and other social service providers.
Some others are
deployed to assist the district and municipal assemblies carry out their
development programmes.
The Acting Director
appealed to the beneficiary institutions to help provide accommodation for
these service personnel throughout stay to perform their duties.
He mentioned that some
section of the public, especially parents and prospects criticize NSS for
posting graduate or them to rural areas in the country, when their expectations
are not met. He was quick to add that posting of personnel is partly for national
unity. And not punish personnel.
